Looking for healthy breakfast ideas? Need something you can whip up in 5 minutes that’s healthy and actually tastes good? Then you need my bananas foster healthy oatmeal recipe! I’ve made this exact recipe almost every morning for over 10 years. Seriously! If I’ve eaten it over 3500 times and now have my kids going crazy for it, then you know it’s good!
“I have to be honest with you – I thought you were crazy for suggesting peanut butter in oatmeal, but now it’s one of my favorite foods!”
I love when my clients get honest with me. Ha!
Is oatmeal healthy?
You probably know that oatmeal is a healthy food. But I still find some mistakes people make when they eat it.
Healthy eating isn’t just about what you choose to eat. It’s also the way you eat it.
And what you need is balance.
You see, oatmeal is a carb. And while carbs aren’t bad (actually, no foods are!), they will do so much better in your body when they’re paired with protein.
The mistake I see people make is cooking oatmeal in water and just eating it that way. There’s no shame in that if that’s how you like it, but cooking it in milk adds protein to help with the way your body processes those carbs. Not to mention, the milk adds delicious creaminess and flavor that water just doesn’t do!
So, I often recommend cooking your oatmeal in a milk that has protein. Spoiler alert: Not all milk does! Check your label!
For an added protein (and flavor) boost, stir in peanut butter.
How much should I eat for breakfast?
“But wait,” you’re thinking, “doesn’t this breakfast have too many calories and carbs? You’re adding bananas, peanut butter, and nuts to oats and milk?!”
Actually, starting your day with a balanced and substantial breakfast is a great way to prevent nighttime binges and crazy sugar cravings! (If you struggle with that, get help here!).
So, this healthy oatmeal recipe is balanced, filling, and highly satisfying – all the ingredients you need to stay on track with healthy eating!
