You may not consider salisbury steak a go-to healthy meal, given that it’s made with ground beef and covered in delectable brown gravy. However, this super easy makeover recipe features the addition of black beans and oatmeal to add nutrients and reduce fat. Plus, you get two extra patties, which make this perfect for a family meal. So go ahead and add this gluten free salisbury steak recipe to your regular dinner rotation like I have!
There are only a few meals I make that when my husband walks in the door from work, I’m convinced he’s going to drop to one knee and propose again. (OK, confession: I’m secretly hoping one day he will so we can have a getaway vowel renewal. 🤞🏻 I guess these are the thoughts you have when you get married pre-Pinterest!) This gluten free salisbury steak recipe with black beans and oatmeal may just be my golden ticket, thanks to CincyShopper‘s insanely popular Simple Salisbury Steak recipe on Pinterest. With more than 1.1 million saves, you know it has to be good!
Not only is this an easy recipe to throw together, but it’s a money saving meal, too! Aaanndd if that’s not enough, you can make it ahead of time. What’s better than that for a busy family? I like to mix these up while my son is napping, then store them in the fridge until it’s time to cook dinner. I haven’t tried this frozen yet, but I don’t see why it couldn’t work!
If I do end up getting a breathtaking vowel renewal, I’ll owe allll my thanks to CincyShopper. For now, I’ll just thank her for one of our favorite go-to easy and healthy dinner ideas that I’ve made gluten free.
Health Hack:
One of my favorite healthy eating hacks I learned in my dietetic internship was to add black beans to ground beef. This trick gives you extra mileage of your meat (more food for less money) and improves the nutrition factor. Black beans add fiber, protein, and important nutrients without any fat. Plus, they’re super cheap, and it’s simple to do. I’m pretty sure black beans can be added to just about anything, and this is one recipe where they work perfectly! With the addition of half a can of black beans, you’ll get TWO extra salisbury steak patties – perfect for leftovers or large family size dinners!
I follow CincyShopper’s easy salisbury steak recipe almost to a T, but I add the black beans and substitute oatmeal for bread crumbs. The oatmeal sub works great if you don’t stay stocked with breadcrumbs, have to eat gluten-free, and/or if you want to make it even more healthy. Oats provide more fiber and nutrients than bread crumbs, and you’ll never notice the difference. I use this organic brown gravy that can turn practically any recipe into savory-meal heaven. Throw some mushrooms in if you want to make it EVEN better (if that’s possible).
Serve this delicious homemade gluten free salisbury steak over creamy risotto and alongside roasted vegetables, and you have yourself the perfect marriage of healthy and tasty…even if there’s no diamond involved.
Passionately,
Alyssa
